Texas Wine - Fredericksburg
“You had me at Merlot”
Anyone else relate? Haha! Well, along enjoying some great wine, there is another experience related to that which makes my heart smile, visiting vineyards and wine tasting of course!
A short time after moving to Austin, I was told about the Texas Hill Country and of course I was quickly trying to plan an excuse for a visit. Fredericksburg is a town about 1.5 hours from Austin, and after passing all the farms and cattle along the way, you come across numerous vineyards.
We decided to plan a day date for our anniversary, so I did some research and found three vineyards to go visit. My top three were Barons Creek Vineyards, Grape Creek Vineyards and Signor Wines.
Our first stop was at Barons Creek Vineyard, what had originally caught my attention was the beautiful grounds. The tasting room is pure elegance and the outdoor space is just as charming. We visited during a weekday and had no reservations but were welcomed and able to enjoy a wonderful tasting. Each wine selection was explained in detail, my personal favorite was the Merlot, which was a pleasant surprise because it was much smoother than it traditionally tastes. Our tasting was composed of only reds and the cost was $35 per person, you can also schedule a cheese and wine tasting and group tastings.
Grape Creek Vineyards reminded me of Tuscany and was our second stop, this was planned strategically. In this vineyard you also find Stout’s Trattoria which was the perfect spot for us to grab some lunch before more tastings. We enjoyed their meatball appetizer which was AH-mazing and shared a pizza. We ended up skipping the formal tasting at this location because we chose to enjoy a flight of wines with our lunch. They also offer a Taste and Tour ($35/person), for a guided tour of the facility and the production, as well as tastings from the barrels. Unfortunately we didn’t have time for this experience but it’s something I would love to experience on another trip.
Lastly we visited Signor Vineyards, which was adorable and totally Insta worthy. Now the interesting thing about Signor Vineyards is that there is no production that actually takes place in the premises. The grapes are grown in their location but shipped to another state for production. Signor is very charming from the moment you walk in, it used to be the home a Neurosurgeon which was later bought and turned into a vineyard and the tasting room is what used to be the previous owner’s kitchen.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience and a great day date idea or just fun with girlfriends. We only got a chance to visit the wineries, but it’s said that there’s a lot to enjoy about visiting downtown Fredericksburg as well.
